Akiyoshi Totoki –– Life Among Trees and Urushi
Museum Past
From shaping the wooden base to applying urushi, the tree sap, at every step in the lacquer-making process, Akiyoshi Totoki is driven by his admiration for materials and forms. Wood and urushi from trees are recombined into lacquerware through his refined handicraft techniques, conforming to today’s way of life and infused with functional beauty. This exhibit featuring Totoki’s new works explores its plastic beauty and its formation, also introducing his on-going activity of propagating the rich culture of wood and urushi.
