This exhibition rediscovers the woodblock printed books published in early modern Japan from the perspective of art and design, to position the Japanese-style printed book in the history of book design. At the same time, through considering all the elements involved in making books– character shapes of kanji, hiragana, and katakana, the paper, and the printing and binding processes–it introduces the multifaceted world of the Japanese-style printed book in old Japanese writing.
