The Journey to Nikawa ー Tracing the Cultural Origins
Museum Past
Nikawa glue is a traditional material used in Nihonga, modern Japanese-style painting. This glue, used to fix the pigments to the support, has inspired and encouraged the creation of a variety of styles. This exhibition, through a journey tracing the origins of nikawa production, with animal bones and skin as its base materials, provides a multifaceted examination of the use of animal-based materials, its social history, and the forms of expression that nikawa connects.
