Form in Traditional Life Series 20
Hand as Form, Hand as Power
Museum Past
Since the birth of humankind, the hand has developed a wide variety of roles. Its fundamental importance remains unchanged. A research team led by Musashino Art University Humanities and Sciences/Museum Careers Professor Yoshiharu Kamino has for eight years been studying hand- and foot-shaped votive offerings at the Mikata Ishi Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) in the Wakasa region of Fukui Prefecture. While introducing the fascinating forms of these offerings, this research also compels us to rethink the role of the hand as a tool sustaining human lives.
