On June 3, 1991, a large pyroclastic flow from Mt. Unzen Fugen took many people’s lives. Stirred by the single photograph left in a camera owned by a newspaper reporter who died in that disaster, Kazushi OOURA spent thirty years going back and forth between the disaster site and Tokyo, digging up objects damaged by the pyroclastic flow from houses buried in volcanic ash and earth, and creating a record of them. This exhibition addresses Ooura’s fieldwork, in which he addresses, through his own experiences, “Natural threats and human actions.”
